We think of energy storage as the key to a fossil fuel free energy supply. First and foremost we need to store sustainable energy somehow to make mobile systems possible that utilize sustainable energy.

Sustainable energy sources such as solar and wind are inherently intermittent. Therefore, energy storage is essential to providing a consistent supply. Moreover, moving to electric driving, electric building heating, requires more power to be delivered over the grid. To limit the investments needed to increase grid capacity local energy storage can help limiting the peaks and reduce investment costs.

At the same time storing massive amounts of energy needs to be safe, especially if that energy is stored in or near residential or commercial buildings.
